Coniques au XIX siècle les meules de foin ou de paille ont fait place à des ballots cylindriques de nos jours. Les balles rondes nécessitent moins de place, et sont plus pratique d'un point de vue logistique, mais elles sèchent plus lentement. Parfois entièrement emmaillotées d'un film plastique pour éviter la dégradation due aux intempéries.
